Scenic Drives & Bushman Paintings

Self-Drive to Sossusvlei

Enjoy a sundowner drive, an excursion to the ancient bushman paintings, or a self-drive tour to Sossusvlei — home to the highest dunes in the world. Pilots meet annually in June for the traditional Fly-In. The Gaub Canyon and Kuiseb River offer extraordinary geological formations dating back millennia.

Swimming Pool

Most Spectacular View in Southern Africa

Our swimming pool offers what we confidently call the most magnificent view in the entire Southern Africa. Perched against the mountain slope, the pool looks out across an endless panorama of the Namib desert — the perfect place to watch the sun paint the dunes in gold and amber.

Annual Fly-In

June Pilot Gathering

Pilots from across Namibia and beyond meet annually at Rostock Ritz each June for the traditional Fly-In — a unique gathering in one of the most remote and spectacular airstrips in the country. The event celebrates the freedom of flight against the backdrop of the Namib.

Stargazing

Unrivalled Dark Sky Experience

Far from any city lights, the Namib offers one of the clearest night skies on Earth. The Milky Way stretches overhead in breathtaking clarity, and with zero light pollution across 12,000 hectares, every night at Rostock Ritz is an unforgettable astronomical event.

Wildlife & Nature

Desert-Adapted Wildlife

The Namib is home to remarkable desert-adapted wildlife. Spot oryx, springbok, mountain zebra, and the elusive brown hyena roaming the vast plains. Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse avian species, while the unique flora — including the ancient welwitschia plant — tells a story millions of years in the making.

Our Story

12,000 Hectares of Boundless Nature

No walls or fences obstruct the spectacular view. No hunting activities on this proud piece of land — herds of Zebra, Springbuck, Ostrich and Oryx roam freely.

The Farm: Rostock South

Initially named “Rotstock” after the red gneiss mountains to the north, the farm lost a letter in the 1960s during farm divisions and is today known as “Rostock”. The farm lies west of the escarpment in the eastern region of the Namib desert.

The Gaub river flows westerly into the Kuiseb river through the rocky Namib Naukluft Park. Natural springs and rockpools can be found in the riverbeds. Here you can explore a cave with historical bushman paintings, well preserved and a thousand years old.

Wolfgang Kücki Kühhirt, founder of Rostock Ritz Desert Lodge, posing in the Namibian desert landscape with a warm welcoming expression

Kücki — The Man Behind It All

Wolfgang “Kücki” Kühhirt, a born Namibian, gained his education and professional German/Swiss training as a hotelier overseas. He came back to establish the legendary restaurant Kücki's Pub at the coast.

In 1989 — 20 years later — Kücki decided to roam the desert to build Rostock Ritz: certainly the only Ritz in the world surrounded by rock and desert. Kücki developed a business principle according to which only Namibians are employed at the lodge, trained personally with thorough knowledge of the hotel industry.

“The only Ritz in the world surrounded by rock and desert.”
